On March 29, 1957 the New York, Ontario & Western Railway Co. was closed down and, for the most part, abandoned. The following is a copy of the March 1957 embargo notice that was issued in conjunction with the closing of the O&W.

Account operations will cease 11:59 pm. March 29, 1957 in compliance with order United States Court, Southern District of New York, embargoes all carload freight which cannot be waybilled and moved from all N.Y.O.&W.Ry. Stations on or before March 27, 1957 destined off line points. (Only exceptions from Port Jervis,N.Y. and Monticello,N.Y. as per embargo No.4)
Account operations will cease 11:59 p.m. March 29, 1957 in compliance with order United States Court, Southern District of New York, embargoes all carload freight which cannot be waybilled and moved on or before March 26, 1957 from stations on Port Jervis and Monticello,Branches, including Port Jervis, N.Y. and Monticello, N.Y. destined off line points. No exceptions.
Account operations will cease 11:59 p.m. March 29, 1957 in compliance with order United States Court, Southern District of New York, embargoes all carload freight from all N.Y.O.&W. Ry. stations for stations on N.Y.O.&W. Ry. which cannot be waybilled and moved on or before March 22, 1957. No exceptions.
