Recalling the Midland
The most interesting article I have read in a long time was that
of Frank E. Cox on "the Old Midland Railroad". I was not born when the railroad
was built, but have heard the stories of the old Midland, whether legend, tradition or
truth. Added to the story of Mr. Cox makes the old Midland history the most important to
the residents of DeRuyter and Otselic Valley. My memory of the railroad commenced soon
after its failing to function.
In the late 70s or early 80s I was a student in the Quaker Basin school
when the rails were being taken up and soon moved into DeRuyter into the house next to the
railroad tracks on North Street near the crossing where I believe the brother of William
Reed met his death while trying to board a morning excursion train.
I have wandered many miles along the old railroad and marveled at the
immense trestles especially the Wibert trestle on Crumb Hill. My father worked on the
"section" when this road was in operation and nearly lost his life on this trestle,
being caught in the middle of it by an oncoming train. I hope Mr. Cox will write some more
out of his "Diary" concerning the days of his youth which I have no doubt will be
very interesting.
