Recalling the old Midland Railroad
J.C. Finch of Sherburne, NY recalling the old Midland Railroad :
"I remember the Sunday School excursion that Frank Stone
speaks of that ran from Norwich to Ithaca, for I was one of the passengers on
that excursion with my father. That was the last train that ran over the road
that catered to passengers. I was only seven years old at that time living in Plymouth.
"They had wood-burning engined at that time. My father
and uncle, Mr. Abraham Bennett, had a wood job on Pigeon Hill and furnished
wood for the railroad company, delivered at Beaver Meadow. Mr. Milo Miles who
operated a sawmill at Beaver Meadow, rented a flat car from the railroad
company, would load the car with lumber, release the hand-brake, start the car
with a pinch bar and the load of lumber was on the way to Norwich, coasting on
the down grade, following the Canaswacta Creek."
